What "food safe" actually has to mean on a stainless steel straw

Stainless steel straws have earned their place in the reusables conversation. They last for years. They don't leach the way some plastics can. And they look good on a counter. The problem is that "stainless steel" is not a safety guarantee on its own. The phrase "food safe" on the packaging isn't one either — not without a certification behind it.

We don't use food safety language on any product page without a verifiable anchor. Here is what that anchor should look like.

Why the metal grade matters

Not all stainless steel is the same. The alloy grade determines how much a metal may leach into food or liquid over time — especially when exposed to heat or acidic drinks. A straw marked "stainless steel" could be any number of alloys. The grades most commonly accepted for food contact are 304 and 316. But the grade alone doesn't prove the finished product is safe. It's a starting point, not a finish line.

That is exactly why third-party certification exists.

FDA food contact — what it covers

In the United States, materials that touch food are governed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's food contact regulations — commonly called FDA Food Contact standards. These regulations define which substances can legally contact food and under what conditions. A product made in compliance with FDA Food Contact requirements has been evaluated against those defined limits.

FDA Food Contact compliance is a legal baseline in the U.S. market. It doesn't mean the product was tested by an independent lab on your behalf. It means the manufacturer has affirmed the materials meet federal requirements. That's a meaningful floor. It's also worth knowing it's a floor, not a ceiling.

LFGB — the German standard worth recognizing

The LFGB — which stands for Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, Germany's Food and Feed Code — sets the testing standard for food-contact materials in Germany and is widely used as a benchmark across Europe. In practice, LFGB testing is often more rigorous than FDA Food Contact requirements. It subjects materials to migration testing — meaning it checks what actually moves from the product into food or liquid under realistic conditions.

LFGB certification is not required to sell in the U.S. But many manufacturers pursue it specifically because it signals a higher level of independent verification. When you see LFGB listed on a straw's product page, it means a lab ran migration tests and the product passed defined limits for what it releases into your drink.

That's a different claim from "food safe." It's a tested result.

ISO 22000 — the system behind the product

ISO 22000 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization. It applies to food safety management systems — the processes and controls a manufacturer uses throughout production. ISO 22000 certification means an organization was audited against defined requirements for identifying and managing food safety risks at every stage of manufacturing.

It doesn't certify a single product. It certifies the system that made it. That distinction matters. A manufacturer with ISO 22000 certification has built food safety into how they operate — not just how they label their packaging.

What to look for on the label

  • FDA Food Contact — U.S. legal baseline for materials touching food. A necessary minimum.
  • LFGB — German food contact standard. Includes migration testing. Often a stricter bar than FDA alone.
  • ISO 22000 — certifies the manufacturer's food safety management system, not just the finished product.

A straw that carries LFGB testing and comes from an ISO 22000-certified facility is telling you something specific and verifiable. A straw that says "food grade" and stops there is telling you very little.

We think "food safe" is one of the easiest phrases to print and one of the hardest to mean. A certification makes it mean something. That's the difference between a marketing claim and a tested, audited fact — and it's the only kind of food safety language we're willing to stand behind.
